Happy #MayDay! To celebrate, we are putting the spotlight on our community partner, Arise Chicago. Arise is a worker power organization that organizes low-paid immigrant workers and their faith community allies to take power in workplaces and win public policy changes that uplift all workers.
Arise member leader, Carlos, shared the importance of the May Day March:
"Today it is more important than ever to leave fear behind and stand up for ourselves and our neighbors. On May Day, we will march for our rights, dignity, safe jobs, and good wages! We are calling on all compañeros, from any country, of any race, to unite in this struggle and speak with one voice, so that we can be heard; because we may be of different backgrounds or nationalities, but the color of all our blood is red."
Shelly, Communications Directors at Arise, explained why their programming is impactful for workers in Chicago:
“Our members have taken action on the job to end discrimination, sexual harassment, and health and safety hazards. We have organized our members and faith community allies to make system gains for workers, including winning 9 laws at the city, county, and state levels. This systemic impact is matched by the individual impact we see in workers through our leadership development programming. Members not only lead their own workplace campaigns, but also become policy campaign spokespeople, teach our Domestic Worker Institute classes, and oversee the organization on our board of directors.”
